Flats are often specified to be oriented 90 degrees from each other on opposite ends of the pin, meaning there is a flat at one end of the pin facing "North-South" and on the other end of the pin its "East-West". Flats offer strong anti pull out and anti-rotational forces but when pressed into a plated through hole can cock the pin off center.
